Studerade piano vid Juilliard School of Music och var under 50-talet verksam som ackompanjatör. Slog igenom som sångerska 1959 med sin version av I love you, Porgy (ur Porgy & Bess) och har blivit ett av de främsta namnen inom soulmusiken med en intensiv, personlig sångstil. Har gjort många inspelningar och haft stora framgångar vid musikfestivaler o.s.v.
