Från 1936, när han bildade sitt swingstorband, till 1953, då han bildade ett band med sin bror, klarinettisten och altsaxofonisten Jimmy Dorsey var hans storband ett av USA:s mest populära. Där fanns flera framstående musiker, som gavs ganska litet soloutrymme. Frank Sinatra sjöng med bandet under en period.
