Cooke var en av rockmusikens stilbildare. Parallellt med Ray Charles, James Brown och Smokey Robinson medverkade han till att omforma musiken från gospel och r&b till soul. Otaliga artister har spelat in hans kompositioner och han påverkade praktiskt taget alla efterkommande soulsångare samt rocksångare som t.ex. Van Morrison och Rod Stewart. Cooke blev skjuten av motelportieren Bertha Franklin.
