Clapton var tillsammans med Jimi Hendrix en av de mest inflytelserika gitarristerna i slutet av 1960-talet. Han utökade den elektriska gitarrens register genom att i hög grad göra den till ett soloinstrument med hjälp av ton, volym och elektroniska effekter. Även om Clapton efter uppehållet 1971-74 aldrig helt har lyckats återta sin position, omnämns hans namn forftarande med stor respekt.
