Genombrottet kom när gruppen i slutet av 1963 inledde ett samarbete med William "Smokey" Robinson, som komponerade och producerade singeln The way you do the things you do. Det blev början på en rad låtar som både melodimässigt och vad vokal- och orkesterarrangemangen beträffade hävdade sig som några av Detroitmusikens allra yppersta upptagningar. - - -
Komplexa, medryckande arrangemang och ett effektivt utnyttjande av den enskilda gruppmedlemmarnas röster gjorde att The Temptations behöll sin ställning som en av 1960-talets viktigaste soulgrupper. Det fanns inget schablonaktigt över gruppens singlar, och till skillnad från många andra Motowngrupper var de flesta av gruppens LP-skivor helgjutna.
