Under slutet av 1970-talet skapade de en otrolig scenshow med Maurice White som centralgestalt i en explosiv syntes av street funk och scenisk magi. Musiken var r&b och modern soul på hög musikalisk nivå med White som försångare, uppbackad av Baileys enastående falsettröst. Gruppens textuniversum var ofta mytiskt, byggt på Whites intresse för egyptologi, men generellt fanns det även ett universellt kärleksbudskap.
