The Art of Noise kom från början som en fräsch och annorlunda musikalisk fläkt. Gruppen var en av de första som arbetade med samplade breakbeats och den har också i viss grad påverkat mycket av den dansmusik som dominerade den engelska scenen i början på 1990-talet, inte så mycket genom gruppens skivor, utan snarare genom de tre medlemmarnas jobb som producenter och tekniker.
