Gruppen har skapat begreppet "southern rock" – en saftig, gungande boogie- och bluesbaserad rock som bl.a. karakteriseras av samspelet mellan två leadgitarrister. Bland senare band i denna genre kan nämnas Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet och Marshall Tucker Band. Vid Duane Allmans död förlorade Allman Brothers Band en mycket stor kraft. Men Betts är vuxen uppgiften och har klart utmärkt sig som en av de största gitarristerna i genren, och han har också vunnit erkännande för sina jazzpräglade improvisationer. Bandets känsla för improvisationer har givit det en särställning inom rocken, där just den konsten odlas av ett fåtal och behärskas av ännu färre.
